First of all, can we get an amen for how far diaper bags have come? It’s 2017 and no longer are we relegated to cheap nylon and pastels. Unless of course nylon and pastels are your thing, then well, party on. But I’ll take a tote-turned-diaper-bag any day of the week over the bags of yesteryear.

If there is one thing I’ve mastered in the last 3 years, one thing I know will make me feel totally on top of my mom game; its a well packed diaper bag. Yes, I’m 3 years into this mom thing and still changing diapers. My little guys is taking his sweet, sweet time with potty training. So we still have a diaper bag in the car at all times, even though most short trips around town don’t require us to take it out of the car. (I’m a big believer in the back-of-the-mini-van-diaper-change. He’s terrified of the loud hand dryers in public restrooms…yeah that’s as fun as you imagine it is.)

So here is my can’t fail list for packing the perfect diaper bag:

  1. Diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream
  2. At least one change of clothes, two if you’re gone all day
  3. All. The. Snacks. Snacks will save you. Never leave without the snacks.
  4. Diaper disposal bags. You never know when you’ll have to change a #2 and there’s no trash can in sight.
  5. Sunscreen
  6. A hat or sunglasses
  7. Light jacket or sweater
  8. Small toy or two (in our case its a couple cars, or trains)
  9. Gallon ziplock bag (for soiled clothes)
  10. Water bottle/sippy cup
  11. Band-aids
  12. Travel size Kleenex

For newborns and infants you may need:

  1. Bottles: pre-made or empty
  2. Formula or breastmilk
  3. bottled water (for mixing formula or rinsing a bottle
  4. Pacifier (x2)
  5. Light blanket (receiving or muslin blanket)

If you stick to this list, you will be prepared for ANYTHING. Plus lets face it, most days us moms (and some dads I’m sure) feel like we’re barely holding it together. So anytime you have the chance to set yourself up for a win, DO IT. Then even if your kid is the one swinging from a chandelier, at least you’ll have snacks to make them stop screaming. Win, win.
